Hot Air Heating Up Your Car?

What’s Causing Your A/C to Malfunction

Miserable in a Hot Car?

No one likes a hot car, especially when the culprit is your air conditioning. It creates an uncomfortable environment for everyone inside, and the malfunction can affect your vehicle. So, what is behind this system failure? And is there anything you can do before it becomes a more expensive issue?

Possible Causes

Refrigerant Fluid Levels—One of the most common issues is low refrigerant fluid levels. When the level is low, your air conditioning system won’t be able to cool properly, producing a noticeably decreased ability to cool the cabin. If water gets in to mix with the refrigerant, the combination becomes highly acidic, which doesn’t help with the cooling. This corrosive acid can deteriorate any rubber seals it contacts, creating prime areas for leaks. Too much refrigerant fluid doesn’t help your vehicle either. When this happens, a failing A/C compressor can emit a high-pitched squeal whenever you turn it on.

Cabin Filter—Not hearing a strange sound? Maybe smelling something weird? Your cabin filter may be dirty or damp. Whether you can do this on your own or employ your trusted automotive repair shop for a preventative maintenance plan, making routine filter changes easy to avoid this problem.

A/C Fan—Sometimes, the fan that pushes the cool air from the system and into the cabin can stop working due to age or lack of maintenance. This can also sound like an ear-piercing screech whenever you start your vehicle or turn on the A/C.

System Blockage—If your filter and fluid levels are fine, the issue may be a blockage in the air conditioning system’s condenser. Outdoor environmental conditions can create blockages throughout the system, especially the evaporator core, that prevent the output of cooler air.

If you experience any of these issues, visit your trusted automotive repair shop to avoid further damage to the air conditioning and all associated systems.
