Synthetic Oil 101
Let’s talk about synthetic oil for your car.
What is Synthetic Oil?
Synthetic oil is a man-made lubricant for vehicles. With a typical base of distilled crude oil, this lubricant is used instead of conventional oils. The mix of artificial chemical compounds can handle higher temperatures and improve fuel efficiency.
Originally, it was developed in 1929 during World War II, when access to conventional oil was limited. By the 1970s, the need for better alternative oil options became urgent during the American Energy Crisis. The oil manufacturers have proprietary blends of additives and processes for creating their specific synthetic oils.
Why Use Synthetic?
The best choice between conventional, synthetic blend, or 100% synthetic oil is the latter. While it can cost more, using fully synthetic oil is an investment in your vehicle, paying off in longevity and better protection. Synthetic oil has unbeatable engine protection and overall performance. This is because of the higher quality of base oils, which have lower chances of acidity and oxidation and are more stable. The combination is more difficult to break down and keeps the qualities that keep your vehicle moving smoothly.
The lower viscosity of synthetic oil flows easier to the engine parts that need lubrication. This faster lubrication means those parts can move quicker and will help improve fuel efficiency. Also, its ability to withstand higher temperatures and still flow in colder ones ensures it reduces engine wear and helps keep the engine running longer.
Should You Use Synthetic Motor Oil?
Given that synthetic motor oil costs double, sometimes quadruple, the cost of regular synthetic blends, you should always check your owner’s manual to see what the manufacturer recommends. However, there are times when switching or upgrading to fully synthetic is worth the cost:
- Short Trips—Standard motor oil may not get the chance to heat up enough, so conventional oil can break down faster due to accumulated moisture and impurities.
- Extreme Weather—Regions with extremely hot or cold weather can take a harder toll on your engine with conventional oil.
- Older Engine—Older engines are prone to buildup, which can negatively impact performance and lead to engine failure.
